Project Description

Location:   Holland, MI
Type: Backyard Makeover
Year Completed:   2012

Create an oasis in a confined fenced in area with neighbors on all sides, low long term maintenance, instant aged look, integrating 4 separate use areas, an old pool deck with new drainage, new finishes and an existing hot tub.

The Challenges

This was a very confined space with no access on property for equipment, an existing pool in the middle of the project site, resurfacing old pool deck and new so they match, installing 120,000 lbs of Pennsylvania field stone into a green space of only 2000 sq ft. with the only access from one side through a woods. There is a 3-4’ elevation change from the entry point to the pool deck level and we wanted something subtle, like it grew there and fit into the natural traffic flow of the space.

We used large boulder stones to raise the hot tub up to the deck level along with concrete block walls under the deck to hold the soil back. Then continued the wall around the back of the property  and incorporating the fire ring and patio into the shape of the wall. We used large boulders as seats around the fire ring for extra siting and a nice inviting feel. The wall uses planter beds built in to keep it soft and natural looking.

The concrete steps were poured between the larger rock to give a beautiful natural look. The old concrete and new were surfaced with a micro topping in a soft earth tone color to give a consistent look and beauty to the old pool deck. Drainage was installed through out including channel drains on the pool deck and french drains around the patios to contain the water on this tight site. Belgard pavers were used on the fire patio and sun deck to maximize the aesthetics and quality of the project.
